Spray Foam Insulation in Florida

Open-cell spray foam is a low-density polyurethane foam sprayed into attic rafters, wall cavities and other structural spaces. On application it expands rapidly, filling cracks and gaps that fiberglass batts and blown insulation typically miss, then cures into a soft, spongy, airtight barrier.

Unlike closed-cell foam, open-cell foam stays semi-permeable, which allows some breathability. That matters in Florida, where a fully vapor-sealed assembly done wrong can trap humidity inside wall or roof cavities and lead to mold. Correct application in Florida's climate typically calls for open-cell foam at the roofline with attention to vapor management at the eaves and soffits.

A tighter, better insulated attic reduces the cooling load your HVAC system has to fight, which lowers your annual kilowatt hour usage. Since we size every solar array from your last 12 months of usage, cutting usage before you go solar can mean a smaller, less expensive system reaches the same offset.

For new construction or a full re-roof, spray foam and solar planning should happen together. Sealing the attic first and locking in the resulting usage numbers before finalizing your solar design avoids oversizing an array to cover inefficiency that foam could have eliminated for less money.

In an existing home, spray foam is usually applied to the underside of the roof deck, converting a vented attic into a conditioned space, or along the attic floor over existing insulation. Access for retrofit work is easiest during a re-roof, when the deck is exposed, or through existing attic access if the framing allows a crew to work safely.

In new construction, foam goes in after framing and before drywall, which gives the best coverage and lets us coordinate directly with your electrical rough-in so wiring penetrations get sealed correctly the first time.
