Why go solar in Florida

Five Reasons Florida Homeowners Choose Residential Solar Panels

Florida averages more than 230 sunny days a year and some of the fastest rising residential electric rates in the Southeast. Solar turns roof space you already own into a fixed price power supply.

Lower Monthly Bills

Panels offset the kilowatt hours you currently buy from FPL, Duke, TECO or your co-op. Most of our customers offset 70% to 100% of annual usage.

Protection from Rate Increases

Retail electric rates have climbed roughly 3% per year since 1970. Power produced by your own array has a fixed lifetime cost.

Higher Resale Value

Appraisers and Florida buyers assign real value to an owned solar array, and homes with solar tend to move faster in coastal markets.

Outage Protection When Paired with a Battery

Panels alone shut down in an outage. Add a Powerwall and your array recharges the battery through a multi day storm event.

A Smaller Carbon Footprint

Grid power in Florida is still heavily natural gas. Every kilowatt hour produced on your roof displaces fuel burned at a plant.

Equipment

The Panels and Inverters We Actually Install

We install three panel lines depending on your roof space and budget: the Trina 445W, a strong value panel for larger roofs; the REC 460W, a high output panel for tighter roof space; and the Tesla 420W, for homeowners who want full integration with Powerwall and the Tesla app. All three are Tier 1 monocrystalline modules built for the Florida climate.

For inverters we install Tesla and Enphase. Tesla's inverter is built into the Powerwall 3 for a single integrated system. Enphase uses microinverters at each panel, which keeps production up even if one panel is shaded or serviced.

Every array we design is engineered to the Florida Building Code wind speed for your county, which ranges from 140 mph inland to 180 mph plus in the Keys. Attachment spacing, rail selection and flashing are all specified for that zone, not for a generic national standard.

Florida specifics

Net Metering, Permitting, HOA Rules and Incentives in Florida

Florida investor owned utilities still credit exported solar at the retail rate under one to one net metering, which is what makes a properly sized array pencil out. Credits roll month to month and any remaining balance trues up annually at the avoided cost rate, so oversizing far past your usage is rarely worth it.

Permitting runs through your city or county building department, and every jurisdiction has its own plan review queue. Lee, Collier and Miami-Dade counties each handle wind load documentation differently, and Miami-Dade requires product approval numbers on the attachment hardware. We prepare those packages in house.

Florida Statute 163.04 limits how much a homeowners association can restrict solar. An HOA cannot ban panels outright or force you to place them where production drops materially, though reasonable aesthetic requests are common. We prepare HOA submittals with drawings so the board has what it needs the first time.

Federal residential tax credits have expired. Depreciation may be available depending on your tax situation, and we can connect you with Solar ITC to review it. Florida's sales tax exemption and property tax exemption for solar equipment are still in effect.

Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Solar Worth It in Florida?

For most owner occupied Florida homes with real daytime and cooling load, yes. High year round sun, rising retail rates and one to one net metering in most territories are what make solar worth it in Florida when the system is owned rather than leased.

How Do Net Metering Florida Rules Work?

Net metering Florida rules differ by utility. FPL, Duke and TECO credit exported kilowatt hours at retail on a monthly rollover with an annual true up, while municipals and co-ops set their own terms. We confirm yours before designing.

Do Solar Panels Work in Hurricanes?

Panels are engineered to the wind load of your county, and solar panel hurricane resistance Florida wide comes from the attachment and rail system more than the module itself. Arrays shut down during a grid outage unless a battery is installed.

Is There a Solar Company Near Me in Florida?

If you are searching solar company near me, solar contractor near me or solar panel installers near me anywhere from Naples to Miami to Tampa, we cover it. Coastal Energy is a solar panel company Florida owned and operated with three offices in state.

Should I Add a Battery at the Same Time?

Most homeowners should. Solar plus storage installation in one permit avoids paying twice for electrical work, and an integrated solar roof and battery system keeps critical loads running when the grid drops.

How much do solar panels cost in Florida?

Solar starts at $2.30 per watt installed in Florida, with typical residential systems starting at about $16,000 and ranging up to $38,000. A 6 kW system runs $16,200 to $17,400, a 10 kW system runs $25,000 to $27,000, and a 15 kW system runs $34,500 to $37,500. Roof complexity, panel count and electrical panel upgrades drive the spread within each range, so contact us for an exact quote.

How many solar panels does a Florida home need?

Between 14 and 34 modules for most homes, depending on the panel wattage chosen. We size the array from your last 12 months of kilowatt hour usage rather than square footage, because pool pumps and air conditioning tonnage matter more than house size.

Does Florida still have net metering?

Yes. Investor owned utilities credit exported energy at the retail rate under one to one net metering, with credits rolling forward month to month and an annual true up at avoided cost.

How long does a solar installation take?

The array itself usually goes up in one to three days. The full timeline from signed contract to utility permission to operate runs 8 to 14 weeks, and permitting is the largest variable.

What Size Solar System Do I Need?

We answer what size solar system do I need from your trailing 12 months of utility usage, not square footage. That same math answers how many solar panels do I need for my house, which for most Florida homes lands between 15 and 35 panels.

Is There a Florida Solar Tax Credit 2026 Homeowners Can Claim?

Florida has no state solar tax credit and the federal residential credit has expired, so we never quote after credit math on a home. The federal solar investment tax credit and depreciation still apply to commercial systems.

What Is the Solar Panel Lifespan?

Solar panel lifespan is typically 25 to 30 years of productive output. Manufacturer product and performance warranties remain separate, while eligible new installations include 30 year Solar Insure parts and labor protection.

What Drives Solar Panel Installation Cost Florida Wide?

Solar panel installation cost Florida wide moves with system size, roof material, electrical upgrades and battery scope. Home solar system design starts with your usage history, then we price the exact equipment list.

How Do I Lower My Electric Bill in Florida?

The practical answers on how to lower your electric bill in Florida are efficiency first, then generation. Sealing the attic, tuning the AC and adding solar together reduce electric bill Florida households pay year round.

What panel and inverter brands does Coastal Energy install?

We install Trina 445W, REC 460W and Tesla 420W panels, paired with Tesla or Enphase inverters. Manufacturer warranties remain separate, and eligible new installations include 30 year Solar Insure parts and labor protection.

Do solar panels work during a hurricane or power outage?

Panels are engineered to your county wind zone and stay on the roof, but they shut off during a grid outage for safety. Adding a Tesla Powerwall lets the array keep charging the battery and running your home through the outage.

Should I replace my roof before installing solar?

If your roof has fewer than 10 years of life left, replace it first. We install metal and tile roofing, not shingle, because metal and tile hold up to Florida sun, salt air and hurricane wind far longer than shingle. Removing and reinstalling an array later adds cost, so it is worth handling up front.

Are there still tax incentives for solar in Florida?

Federal residential tax credits have expired. Depreciation may be available depending on your tax situation, and we can connect you with Solar ITC to review it. Florida's solar sales tax exemption and property tax exemption are still in effect for homeowners.
