Why it matters
Never Be Without Power When It Matters Most
Florida homeowners know the pattern. A hurricane or tropical storm moves through, lines come down, and restoration can take days in hard-hit neighborhoods. Even outside storm season, afternoon thunderstorms, lightning strikes and equipment failures on the utility side can knock power out with no warning.
An outage quickly becomes more than an inconvenience. Refrigerators and freezers start warming within hours, air conditioning stops in the middle of summer heat and humidity, and internet and phone charging go dark right when you need updates. Homes with well pumps lose water, sump and lift pumps stop, and anyone who depends on powered medical equipment needs a plan that does not rely on the grid.
A Generac home standby generator is built for exactly this situation. It is not a portable unit you drag out and refuel by hand. It is a permanent backup power system that watches for an outage and responds on its own, so your home keeps running whether you are there or not.
How it works
How Generac Standby Generators Work
The generator sits on a pad outside your home and connects to a natural gas line or a propane tank. An automatic transfer switch installed at your electrical service ties it all together.
Step 01
Utility Power Goes Out
The transfer switch senses the loss of utility voltage.
Step 02
Generator Starts
The generator starts automatically within seconds.
Step 03
Switch Transfers
Designated circuits move to generator power.
Step 04
Grid Returns
Loads transfer back and the generator cools down and shuts off.
Benefits
Benefits of a Generac Whole-Home Generator
Actual backup coverage always depends on generator capacity, the electrical loads you choose to back up, and how the system is installed.
Automatic Backup Power
No cords, no manual start. The system responds to an outage even when nobody is home.
Extended Operation With Adequate Fuel
On a natural gas line or a properly sized propane tank, the generator keeps running as long as fuel is available and the unit is maintained.
Protection for Essential Systems
Keep refrigeration, lighting, internet, well pumps and, with the right size, central air conditioning running.
Natural Gas or Propane
Generac Guardian Series units are rated for natural gas or LP operation, so you can use the fuel available at your property.
Automatic Transfer Switching
Generac offers 100 amp circuit switches and 200 amp service rated smart switches, depending on the model and your service.
Remote Monitoring
Guardian Series units include Wi-Fi connectivity for the Mobile Link app, which shows generator status, alerts and exercise schedules.
Professional Installation and Sizing
A licensed load review and correct placement matter as much as the generator itself.
Sizing
Choosing the Right Generac Generator Size
Generator size is measured in kilowatts (kW). Generac's current air-cooled Guardian Series covers 10, 14, 18, 20, 22, 24 and 26 kW standby ratings, with the 26 kW unit marketed for whole-house coverage. Choosing between them is about how much your home needs at the same moment, not just its square footage.
Central air conditioning is usually the biggest factor in Florida. Compressors and motors, including AC units, pool pumps and well pumps, draw a surge of current when they start, so the generator must handle those starting loads on top of everything already running. Refrigerators, freezers, electric water heaters, ranges and dryers add up quickly, and medical equipment needs dependable priority.
We also look at your electrical service capacity, typically 200 amps on most homes, and whether you want every circuit backed up or a selected group of essential circuits. Two homes with the same square footage can need very different generators, so no single size is right for every house.

Extended backup
Combine a Generac Generator and PWRcell Battery for Extended Backup Power
In Generac's system design, the Smart Disconnect Switch is the hub that connects solar, battery storage, the grid, your home and a compatible standby generator: Solar Panels → PWRcell 2 Battery → Home, with the generator tied in through the Smart Disconnect Switch. Integration depends on a compatible Generac generator model, the right transfer equipment, system configuration and professional installation. Not every existing Generac generator can be paired with PWRcell 2.
Battery First
Stored energy supports the home quietly during an outage.
Generator When Needed
When battery levels get low, a compatible generator starts automatically.
Power and Recharge
In supported setups the generator powers the home and recharges the battery, subject to fuel.
Smart Load Priorities
PWRmanager can shed non-essential loads to stretch backup time.
One Integrated Plan
Solar, battery storage and fuel-powered generation working together.

Which Backup Option Fits Your Home?
If you already have solar or plan to add it, a battery such as Generac PWRcell 2 or Tesla Powerwall recharges from your panels during a multi-day outage and lowers your power bill the rest of the year. If you want to run a large home for many days on a reliable gas supply, a standby generator is often the stronger fit. We will walk you through both honestly.

Placement Matters in Florida
Generac lists its Guardian Series for installation as close as 18 inches to a structure, but only away from doors, windows and fresh air intakes and in line with local codes. In coastal Florida we also consider flood elevation, drainage, wind exposure and service access. A generator is not designed to run while flooded, and no system can promise power through every hurricane condition, which is why careful site planning comes first.
