Tesla Powershare in Florida: Can Your Tesla Power Your Home After a Hurricane?

Author: Eric Perez, COO - Published - 6 min read

How Powershare turns an eligible Tesla into hurricane backup power, what equipment it needs, and how it fits with solar and Powerwall.

The Short Answer

Yes. With Tesla Powershare, an eligible Tesla plugged into a Wall Connector can power your home automatically during an outage. Tesla estimates a fully charged Cybertruck can run a home using about 30 kWh per day for over three days.

The Morning After the Storm

The storm moved through overnight, and by morning the wind has finally dropped. The power is still out across most of Lee County, though, and the utility is talking about days, not hours. The house is already getting warm and sticky. Out in the garage, your Tesla sits on a full charge.

That car can do more than get you to the gas station that isn't open yet. With Tesla Powershare, the battery in your vehicle can send electricity back into your home during an outage. Here's how Tesla Powershare in Florida can serve as hurricane backup power, what you need to set it up, and how it fits alongside solar and a Tesla Powerwall.

How it works

Powershare in Plain Terms

Normally, power flows from your house into your car. Powershare reverses that flow, turning an eligible Tesla into a large rolling battery. Tesla describes it as a bidirectional charging system that can power your home, along with tools, appliances, or another EV.

For home backup, the system watches the grid for you. When an outage hits, Powershare detects it and lets the vehicle start supplying your home automatically, as long as the car is plugged into a Tesla Wall Connector or Universal Wall Connector.

Florida outages

Why Powershare Fits Florida Outages

Florida outages after a major hurricane don't always clear up by dinnertime. When lines and poles come down across a region, restoration can stretch across several days, which is when a big battery on wheels matters most.

On its own, a fully charged Cybertruck can keep a home running for over three days, by Tesla's estimate. That figure assumes a home using about 30 kWh per day, so your result will depend on how much power you draw.

Air conditioning is the biggest variable here. Cooling an entire Florida home in September heat can drain a battery much faster than lights, a refrigerator, and a few fans. Many homeowners stretch their backup by cooling just one or two rooms, closing off the rest of the house, and saving the oven and dryer for after the grid returns.

The layered setup

Solar, Powerwall and Your Tesla

Powershare can work on its own, but it's most useful alongside solar and a Powerwall.

  1. Step 01

    Solar Produces

Panels make power during the day, even with the grid down, when paired with battery storage.

  2. Step 02

    Powerwall Stores

Stored energy carries the house through the evening and overnight.

  3. Step 03

    Your Tesla Extends

Per Tesla, a Cybertruck adds over three more days; a qualifying Model 3 or Y adds more than two.

One Team for the Whole System

Coastal Energy is Tesla Certified across that full lineup, from solar panels and Tesla Powerwall to EV charging, so one team can design the whole system to work as a unit. Tesla's figures come from its Powershare page.

Before the storm

Getting Your Tesla Ready Before the Storm

Charge to Full

Charge the vehicle while the grid is still up, the same way you'd top off your Powerwall or fill the gas cans.

Confirm Powershare Is On

In your car's Software menu, look under Additional Vehicle Info for "Powershare Support: Enabled."

Park Somewhere Sheltered

A garage protects the car from flying debris. Keep it away from low areas that tend to flood.

Plug Back In

Once the storm passes, the vehicle needs to be back at the Wall Connector to power the house.

Eligibility

Which Vehicles and Equipment You Need

Every Cybertruck supports Powershare today. Tesla has since expanded eligibility: any new Model 3 or Model Y with an order date of October 1, 2026 or later qualifies, along with a number of earlier builds.

The equipment depends on what's already at your home. Homes with a Powerwall 3 and a Tesla Wall Connector don't need anything extra, and Tesla lists Powerwall 2 and Powerwall+ compatibility as coming soon. Cybertruck owners without a Powerwall need a Powershare Gateway and a Universal Wall Connector. Tesla puts the hardware at around $1,950. Installation is quoted per project, since your final price depends on your electrical panel and setup.

Some homeowners use one as their main backup and the other as a supplement. The right setup depends on how long you need to run essentials, whether you have solar, and how much of the house you want cooled.

Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Can My Tesla Provide Vehicle-to-Home Backup During a Florida Hurricane Outage?

Yes, and it can power much of a typical home, but running central AC around the clock will shorten your backup time considerably. Focusing on essentials and cooling only part of the house helps it last.

Do I Need to Unplug Anything When the Power Goes Out?

No. As long as the car stays plugged in, the switchover happens without you lifting a finger.

Does Powershare Work with My Solar Panels?

Powershare backs up your home through your Tesla system, and solar paired with a Powerwall can recharge stored energy during daylight hours. A certified installer can design the setup so all three work together.

Will Powershare Work with an Older Model 3 or Model Y?

For some, yes. Any Model 3 or Model Y ordered October 1, 2026 or later qualifies, and certain older builds do too. Check your vehicle's Additional Vehicle Info screen to find out.
