Standing seam metal is the better roof under solar in Florida because panels clamp to the seams with no penetrations, and it installs at about $12 per square foot. Tile lasts longer but requires flashed penetrations and careful tile handling, which raises labor cost on both the roof and the solar install.

Why the Mounting Method Decides Most of This

On standing seam metal, solar racking clamps directly to the raised seams. Nothing is drilled through the roof surface, so the assembly that keeps water out is never interrupted. That is the single biggest reason we point homeowners toward metal when the roof is being replaced anyway: the highest risk part of a solar install simply goes away.

On tile, each mounting point means lifting tiles, attaching a base to the deck, and installing a flashing that sheds water above and below the penetration. Done properly it is a permanent, watertight detail. Done by a crew that treats tile like shingle, it is a callback. Because we hold roofing license CCC1335978 in-house, the same company that flashes the penetration owns the leak warranty on it.

Reroofing Anyway

Choose standing seam metal. Non-penetrating attachment plus a 40 to 50 year service life matches the solar warranty period.

Tile in Good Condition

Keep it. We inspect underlayment condition and flash every mount, rather than pushing an unnecessary reroof.

Currently Shingle

We do not install shingle. If you want solar over an aging shingle roof, the path is a metal or tile replacement first.

Coastal Salt Exposure

Specify a Kynar finish at $1.50 per square foot for longer color and chalk resistance near the water.

When both scopes run under one contract, the array is designed against the finished roof, the permit schedule is coordinated, and the electrical rough-in happens while access is already open. That collapses two projects with two inspection cycles into one, and it removes the argument about which contractor caused a leak.

It also simplifies responsibility. Our 5 year workmanship warranty covers the installation, including leaks at the penetrations and flashing we install, for five years from system activation. Roofing and equipment material coverage remains under the applicable manufacturer warranties.
