Tesla Powershare: How It Works With Your Home Battery in Florida

Author: Eric Perez, COO - Published - 5 min read

A compatible Tesla can send energy back to your house during an outage. Here is how Powershare works, which vehicles qualify, what equipment you need, and how it pairs with a Tesla Powerwall.

The Short Answer

Tesla Powershare is bidirectional charging: a compatible Tesla can send stored energy back to your home during an outage. All Cybertruck trims support it, and compatible Model 3 and Model Y vehicles can use it with Powerwall 3 and a Wall Connector. Tesla lists up to 11.5 kW of continuous power for Powershare home backup.

What Is Tesla Powershare?

Your Tesla already stores enough energy to take you hundreds of miles down the road. But what happens when you need that electricity at home instead?

That's the idea behind Tesla Powershare. Instead of only drawing power from your home's electrical system to charge your vehicle, Powershare lets a compatible Tesla send energy back to your house. During an outage, that stored electricity can help keep essential appliances running and give you another layer of protection against unexpected power interruptions.

Most EV charging works in one direction. Electricity travels from your home's electrical panel through a charger and into your vehicle's battery. Powershare reverses that process, allowing stored energy in the vehicle to flow back out. For Florida homeowners, where severe weather can put the electrical grid under pressure, it's an interesting addition to a home energy system.

Two ways to use it

Portable Power and Home Backup

Portable Power

Use compatible vehicle outlets or a Tesla Mobile Connector with the appropriate outlet adapter to power certain appliances, tools, and other equipment.

Home Backup

With the right home energy equipment, your vehicle can supply electricity to your home's electrical system during a power outage. This is the more involved setup and requires compatible equipment installed by a qualified professional, rather than simply plugging your vehicle into a regular household outlet.

Eligibility

Which Tesla Vehicles Support Powershare?

Powershare is no longer just a Cybertruck discussion. Tesla now lists compatible Model 3 and Model Y vehicles for home backup with Powerwall 3. Tesla's October 2026 expansion, reported by The Verge, covers new Model 3 and Model Y vehicles ordered in the United States and Puerto Rico after October 1, 2026. That is an order-date condition for those two models, not a promise that all Tesla vehicles purchased or delivered after that date qualify.

Some earlier Model 3 and Model Y vehicles may also support Powershare. Check Software, then Additional Vehicle Info, for the vehicle's Powershare Support status and have Tesla confirm eligibility if the status is missing or unclear. A newer registration or used-car purchase date does not establish compatibility.

Tesla does not currently list Model S or Model X for this home backup setup. Do not assume either model qualifies, even if bought after the October cutoff. Before equipment is ordered, we review the actual vehicle, home battery, Wall Connector and available software together.

How to Check Your Vehicle's Powershare Status

If you own a Model 3 or Model Y, don't assume your vehicle is compatible just because it's a newer model. You can check directly through the vehicle's touchscreen.

  1. Step 01

    Open Software

Open the vehicle's Software menu on the touchscreen.

  2. Step 02

    Additional Vehicle Information

    Select Additional Vehicle Information.

  3. Step 03

    Powershare Support

Look for the Powershare Support field. If it says Enabled, your vehicle supports the feature.

Equipment

What Equipment Does Your Home Need?

The equipment you need depends on whether your home already has a Tesla Powerwall and which vehicle you plan to use. A home with a compatible Powerwall 3 system can use Powershare with an eligible Cybertruck, Model 3, or Model Y. You'll also need a compatible Tesla Wall Connector, such as the Universal Wall Connector or Wall Connector 3. The vehicle, Powerwall, and Wall Connector must be configured correctly for the system to work together.

A Cybertruck can provide home backup without a Powerwall, but the installation requires additional equipment. The standard configuration includes a Tesla Powershare Gateway, a Universal Wall Connector, and a compatible Cybertruck. The Gateway helps isolate your home from the utility grid during an outage, allowing the vehicle to supply backup electricity safely. Depending on your home's electrical setup, an optional Backup Switch may also be part of the installation.

Powerwall 2 and Powerwall+ compatibility is listed by Tesla as coming soon, so homeowners with those systems should confirm the current requirements before making plans.

The layered setup

How Powershare Works With Tesla Powerwall

A Powerwall and a compatible Tesla vehicle can complement each other during an extended outage. Think of it as adding another battery to your existing energy setup.

  1. Step 01

    Solar Produces

If you have solar panels, they can help recharge the battery during daylight hours when the system is configured to operate during an outage.

  2. Step 02

    Powerwall Stores

Your Powerwall stores electricity for use when the grid goes down.

  3. Step 03

    Your Tesla Extends

When your vehicle is connected to the home charging system, it can supply electricity to extend the time your home has backup power available.

How Much of Your Home Can Tesla Powershare Run?

The answer depends on your vehicle, electrical configuration, and household energy use. Tesla lists up to 11.5 kW of continuous power for its Powershare home backup system. That gives the system the ability to support more than just small electronics. Depending on the installation, it can supply power to larger household equipment, including air conditioners, electric cooking ranges, water heaters, and other major appliances.

You may be able to choose between whole-home and partial-home backup. Whole-home backup supplies the home's electrical system, while partial-home backup prioritizes selected circuits and appliances.

Your actual backup time depends on how much electricity your household uses and how much charge is available in the vehicle when the outage begins. Tesla's estimates assume an average U.S. household uses 30 kWh per day and that the vehicle begins with a 90% charge. Your results may be quite different if you run central air conditioning, a pool pump, or several other high-demand appliances.

A professional assessment can help determine which circuits make sense to include and whether your existing electrical panel and energy equipment can support the setup.

The Florida case

Is Tesla Powershare Worth Considering in Florida?

Florida homeowners have several reasons to think about backup power beyond hurricane season. Severe thunderstorms, tropical systems, equipment failures, and other grid interruptions can all leave a home without electricity. Powershare gives eligible Tesla owners another way to use energy they've already stored.

No Separate Fuel Supply

The system uses energy stored in your vehicle rather than gasoline or propane.

Quiet Operation

Battery backup doesn't produce the engine noise associated with a conventional generator.

More Flexible Energy Storage

Your vehicle can supplement a compatible Powerwall system during longer outages.

Support for Larger Household Loads

Depending on the system design, Powershare can do more than keep phones charged and a few lights on.

The Trade-Offs to Weigh

Your vehicle needs to be connected to the home system, and the energy available for backup depends on its charge level. You'll also want to account for your driving needs, installation requirements, and the cost of any additional equipment. You'll need to consider how much charge to keep available for transportation and how much energy your household may need during an outage.

Powershare isn't automatically the right choice for every household. But if you already own a compatible Tesla or are considering a Powerwall, it's worth understanding how the two technologies can fit into your home energy plan. If you're considering adding battery storage to your home, explore Tesla Powerwall solutions. A properly designed system can help you understand how solar, home battery storage, and vehicle backup may work together.
